Time to start caring about what I look like again

I know Mike will cringe upon reading the title of this post, as he thinks I look great {and tells me so} every day, but I'm hoping that I can get to a point where I agree with him.

A year and a half ago I lamented that I didn't feel pretty anymore. But at the time, I wasn't particularly motivated to improve much about my appearance because we were already trying to get pregnant again. Why bother trying to clear up my skin and dye my hair regularly if pregnancy would throw a wrench in it all?

This time around, we'll be holding off on another baby for a while due to financial, space, and sanity reasons (not necessarily in that order). So...no excuses. It's time to feel good about the way I look again.

Let's go!
First up: Clothes. About a month ago, I didn't want to wear maternity jeans anymore so I tried on all of my other jeans but it didn't go so well. Side note: muffin top is not a good look for anyone. So I invested in a few new pairs of jeans and tops. I hadn't bought new {non-maternity} clothes since before I was pregnant with Carina so this felt awesome. Thank you tax return! ;) I think I'll be on the lookout for a couple more Spring/Summer things soon.

Next up: Hair. I confessed to you 2 years ago that I hadn't had my hair cut in a long time. Well, guess when my last haircut was? ::hides:: Okay so it's definitely time (if not way overdue) for a haircut. And I've decided to go blonder. The sort-of blonde from last June just didn't do it for me. Lastly, I need to find a straightener that can tame my frizzy, thick hair in a short amount of time. Recommend yours?

Later: Body. Another thing I haven't done since before I got pregnant with Carina is exercise. I still have more than 10 lbs. left to lose to get to my pre-pregnancy weight and quite a bit of the "bag of saggy jello" remains. But more importantly I'd just like to be healthy and active.

So there it is. Hold me to it? Don't let me go 2 years before getting another haircut again ;)

How fun. Don't put too much pressure on yourself, though...you are doing so much. While I'm not much help with thick hair or color, I do know that your teeth are pretty, white, and straight! I need new clothes, too. Where'd you go for them?

Thank you! Old Navy and Gap...for now. Have plans to go to Ann Taylor soon, thanks to a gift card Mike got me for my birthday :)

Ummm, I'm right there with you on the haircut!!! It's been....so long I don't even remember. My hair is so long, heavy and scraggly. Yuck. We are buying a house so baby #3 will have to wait a few years over here, too. Does it make you sad to know you have to wait? I would get pregnant again in a heartbeat if we were in a more comfortable financial place :( OH and I need to lose 4 pounds to get to my pre-baby weight. But no matter what I do they won't budge. And neither will the "bag of jello." We'll have to egg each other on to step up the "Care about our looks" mentality! Good luck mama :)

It does make me sad. We never wanted to have to worry about it. The plan was to just go Duggar-style until we decided that we were done, but there's just no room right now and I think it would make me go crazy to be pregnant right now.

I haven't had a haircut in almost two years either. The last time was the day before my wedding, lol.

I also have thick, frizzy hair, and I have a Zoe flat iron that I got at Target (though upon inspection, it appears that they no longer carry them, but Walmart does), and I love it! It used to take me at least an hour to straighten my hair, and with this it usually takes less than 20 minutes. CHI straighteners are AMAZING, but super pricey. My dad's ex-wife uses one at her salon, and I used to make excuses to go down there and use it.

My son was born about 1week after Carina. (I found your blog through our month board on The Bump). I still have 30 pounds to go. I think it's partly due to some postpartum things that I've been too scared to admit. I wanted to thank you for sharing your struggles. You've spurred me into looking for some help.

Now, for your question, I love my Chi flat iron. I can straighten my thick, curly, looong hair in about 20 minutes. I've had it since 2006, and it's still going strong. I picked it up for about $70 from folica using one of their frequent coupon codes.

Good luck, Momma. I'm glad you're going to look into getting some help. And thanks for the recommendation!

I wanted to recommend my straightener. I got a babyliss straighter at TJMaxx for about $25. They work just as well as CHI one's do. You just want to make sure you get the professional level ones, so that it is the hotter temperature. It makes all the difference!!

I purposely don't cut my hair for two years or so. I then have it long enough to donate 12" to wigs for kids.

Also I need to exercise too. M is almost 6 months old and I have done nothing, NOTHING. I need a coach. I am hoping spring and nicer weather will motivate me to get out and walk/run with M in the stroller.

It is so wonderful that you do that! I wish I could do it, but my hair has so many gross split ends and is so ridiculously frizzy I don't think they'd want it. Is there someone I can ask about that?

It took me getting away from an abusive marriage and losing over 60lbs to get motivated to care. I *had* to buy new clothes, as the old ones obviously didn't fit anymore - and that really motivated me to do other things also (take better care of my skin, do something with my hair, etc.). I still don't do this every single day (the perks of being a stay-at-home, right?) but I enjoy having a little "me time" to focus on looking presentable. I actually started wearing jewelry again a few weeks ago (that was a HUGE step for me...lol).

I'm on the losing weight part. I didn't lose anything after having Joseph because I sat on my butt. This time I'm doing awesome and I'm already down past my prepregnancy weight with Andrew (#2) and working my way down to Joseph's. I can't wait for the weather to get warmer to take the boys out to the park, which was something I didn't have the energy to do for awhile.

Can I just say, I really like your hair dark! Sooo pretty!! Just sayin' :)

Me too. The dark hair makes you look sooo much younger!!
Regarding hair straighteners, I've heard good reviews about the mall ones... I think it's called amica? Next time you go to the mall, go up to the kiosk and they will do it for you. Also, you can do wavy hair styles with those.
I love my instyler. I have really frizzy curly thick hair, and it makes my hair fantastic and isn't as damaging. That being said I think you should look into some good hair products so you don't have to straighten your hair every day, from experience i can say damaged frizzy hair is the absolute worst, I can help you with that. I have a bunch of recommendations for that. Definitely invest in a good hair masque.

Yes I still have your recommendations you gave me last summer. I just need to bite the bullet and get them! I will probably have questions :)

I hear you! I missed my hair appointment thanks to the last big snow storm. Finally going this week and CHOPPING off my hair. If I went a couple weeks ago I probably would've just trimmed and blonded. But now I'm getting brave!

At least the weather is going to get warmer. It will make that body part easier when parks are an option.

Could you jog with the kiddos? I say tha bc you guys will get to leave the house and also.... Toddlers love being outside haha
Go with the CHI. It is worth its weight in gold. This is coming from someone who spent about $50 at Sally Beauty and bought what I thought was a decent straightener and burned HALF OF MY HEAD and it took 2 years to grow back without frizz. I've had my CHI for 4 years now and it works perfectly.

FYI...I'm on Team Mike & think you are one hot mama. That being said, I think making the commitment to work on yourself FOR YOURSELF is very important. We should sign up for a 5k in Philly sometime this summer & run it together...can you tell I miss you? I'm willing to run to get a visit. <3
Please. You look amazing! FWIW I have a CHI that I've had since I oh... late 2003? Yeah that long. I don't often straighten my hair so that's part of why it has lasted so long. Get a really good straightening balm!

Also, I think that you would look fantastic with a really rich chocolate brown for your hair color. I think it would make your eyes pop even more!

alright, i've been reading for a while but mostly lurking, until now! i've got the straightner for you! i also have frizz tastic hair and the sedu is the way to go: http://www.amazon.com/Sedu-Ionic-Ceramic-Tourmali...
yes, it's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for and it will save you time later on. also, i've had mine for...at least 3 years, and it's kept up with almost daily straightening efforts so that's pretty good. i also just took my hair blonder (i'm a natural red head) and i'm loving it! go for it - you deserve it!
I'm right there with you! 4 and half months after having twins, I'm itching to wear something other than pajamas and actually have brushed teeth! Try not to put too much stress on yourself. Set small goals, so you don't get disappointed. I joined a pilates class twice a week taught at the amenity center in our neighborhood. It's far enough away to allow me to relax, but close enough to home that I don't stress the whole time about getting back. Baby steps!

I love my straightener, it is a solia brand. I've also just recently posted about my new "causal me" look vs. yoga pants and t-shirt looks. I feel so much better already about myself when I'm out.

CHI is where it's at. Don't let the price scare you, it lasts forever. I used to buy WIGO's and and a few other brands people mentioned about and all burned out within like 6 months, so the money I spent replacing those flat irons, I could've spent on my CHI. Ulta has sales on them occasionally or check EBAY, that's where I bought mine.
aw good luck!!!!!! I can't imagine going 2-3 months without getting my hair cut! I swear it nags me daily when I'm even a day overdue. I am actually quitting dying my hair I think (trying...per Jon's request). We'll see what my hair color looks like these days. It's been over 8 months! But I'm still getting it cut regularly.
I am SOOOO looking forward to shopping for non-maternity clothes again.
