I've talked about how much I love my Mom a number of times already, including on Mother's Day last year and in my recent Teach your kids not to be dbags post. She knows that I absolutely adore her and am so happy that I share so many similarities with her. That said, I'm hoping she won't mind if I rag on her a little bit. It's all in good fun, Mom. Can't wait to see you this weekend.
Three Things I'm glad I didn't inherit from my Mom
1. Love of blander than bland food
My Mom is so adverse to the use of spices that her spice rack is full of jars from the 80's. I'm not kidding; I can take pictures to prove it when I'm home this weekend. More than a handful of them have price tags like "89¢" (note: the cent symbol is so old it isn't even on the keyboard - I had to search for it and cut & paste!) When in college, if I went out to dinner with my parents and ordered something spicy, my Mom felt the need to remind me, "but Melissa, that's spicy." As if I couldn't possibly want to order something spicy, just because we never ate it growing up. Needless to say, I don't cook for my Mom often. I tried once, but my spicy turkey chili sans-spice tasted like rubbery chunks in watered down tomato sauce.
2. Addiction to eBay
She spends so much time trolling for deals it boggles my mind. I am usually quite impressed when she snags brand new Ralph Lauren sweaters for $5 and adorable baby clothes for even less {she has an entire armoire in her loft dedicated to designer baby wear}, but I just don't have the cunning to win one online bidding war after another...after another...after another. At one point, before Carina was born, I followed her lead and started bidding on a few items until one day I realized I had bid against her for a particularly cute newborn dress. What are the odds? I gave up; eBay is not for me.
3. Nonexistent alcohol tolerance
Now, there aren't many people that I can drink under the table {when not-pregnant, obviously}, but I am able to down a few Captain and Cokes without having to worry about stumbling around all loopy. My Mom, on the other hand, is drunk after one glass of wine. I have oh-so-many stories I could share with you about this, including the first time she met Mike in my college apartment, but in the interest of her not giving me the evil eye upon arriving in Cape Cod this weekend I'll end this one here. Love you, Mom, and your light-weightedness ;)
Is there anything you're glad you didn't inherit from your Mom?
What I would have liked to inherit but didn't? Boobs. Yep, I said it.
My co-host for Toddle Along Tuesday this week is Krista from AmryWife-Style and the topic is your Mom! Tell us about her. What is she like? Do you strive to be like her? I meant to do this around Mother's Day, but forgot (oops!) There are no rules here, except that you link up a relevant post (old or new) rather than your whole blog.
Next week's topic is how life has changed! What things are different now that baby is here? Have fun with this ;) Old post or new post, either is fine!
If you like advance notice for TAT, check out the bottom right of my blog - topics for the next couple months are listed. Would you like to submit a topic idea and/or volunteer to co-host one week? E-mail me!
